Our last Club day of the year. A cold night a misty start to the day suggested the fish might have gone deeper. Fishing at Colwick had by all reports been challenging but not hopefully as hard as we experienced at “Crybrook” last week!
Ten of us fished from boats, Keith Prowting becoming overall winner for the year by coming top at Colwick with a limit bag weighing 17lb 10oz which included the heaviest fish of 4lb 2oz another of 4lb. Keith started between the Islands, fishing with a Di 5 sweep line all day, starting with his now famous Montaddy on the point and a mini Cats Whisker on the dropper retrieved slowly. He took 3 fish on the Montaddy fished about 3ft down. When takes dried up he moved to Dead Voles Island and changed the mini cat to a white marabou tail and bright green fritz body, sped the retrieve up and had two aggressive takes resulting in bigger fish. Again takes dried up and he moved to the Roadside bank taking 2 more fish, the last carefully released.
Rosemary came 2nd with five fish, 3 caught between the Islands on an orange FAB fished on a Di 3 sweep line, she then moved a few times, drifted down the middle of the lake, before returning to the Island area to take 2 more fish on a Rio Midge Tip line fishing a Black Nomad on a ten foot leader very slowly. Takes dwindled and she moved into Brownie Deeps, lost a decent fish on a Di 3 fishing a Booby on the point. However, Denis (her boat partner) caught on an intermediate with a Black & Green lure).
All caught at least one fish and most fish were taken on Orange, Black & Green or Minkies. Total number of fish 32, a rod average of 3.2 which was certainly better than last weeks’ venue and not at all bad for Colwick going on recent returns.
Make the most of the extended season at Colwick, there are some hard fighting fit fish there.
